How to Beat the Heat
On top of the previous list of ways you can stay cool while waiting to get your air conditioner repaired, there are a number of other things you can do to reduce your discomfort. However, note that all of these methods are temporary. The only really effective, long-term solution is to go to the source of the problem and get your A/C fixed.
One underrated way of staying cool is to drink lots of cold water. No matter how hot it gets, you can stay tolerably comfortable if you stay well-hydrated with cold water. This one is so simple but it just so happens to work extremely well too.
Get Your Clothes Wet
Another way to keep yourself cool is by wetting your clothes with cold water or draping a wet cloth over your neck or on your forehead. While this method will quickly cool you down, it will also make you uncomfortably wet and requires regular re-wetting to be effective.
Plant Deciduous Trees
Unlike the rest of these suggestions, this is one that you can’t do in the short-term. However, when landscaping for your home or looking for a new place, keep in mind the cooling benefits of trees that have leaves in the summer and none in the winter. In the summer, deciduous trees planted on the south and west side of your home will be able to help keep you cool if your A/C happens to break down. Another benefit of planting deciduous trees is that they lose their leaves in the winter, allowing for maximum sunlight.
Go Somewhere Else
This is the most effective way of dealing with a hot home. When it hits mid-day and your house is turning into an oven, head out somewhere with air conditioning for some much needed relief. Some good options are coffee shops, the mall, the grocery store, or a friend’s house. You will appreciate the A/C all the more when you walk in from out of the hot Colorado sun.
Stay Cool While Your Conditioner is Getting Repaired
There are many things you can do to reduce the heat generated in your house and make yourself temporarily cooler, however, the only true, long-term way of beating the heat this summer is by having a properly functioning air conditioner installed in your home.
